I don't like it because it's very wasteful of screen real-estate. I do want to see directory hierarchy, but I don't want my files list to be squeezed into smaller and smaller space so I can see lists of every sibling folder of every folder

It's not a tiny measurement (AFAICS - not entirely sure what you mean by that phrase), it's an extrapolation of a consistent and systematic trend. And it's really not like extrapolating the tides, since we know that tides are by definition

You'd only care if you ever needed to interactively debug your app in the browser. So, unless you're a fan of old-school debugging (ie not debugging, just writing out to the console) you do care about how the javascript looks.
