I'm doing my OU Masters in Maths now, in my 40s. It is definitely hard, but I'm enjoying it. Personally I struggle to learning things thoroughly unless I'm working in the subject, or I have exams to do. My own learning work

Be careful with the direction of causality here. It may be that giving up his hobbies hastened his dementia, OTOH it could easily be that the onset of his dementia led to him giving up his hobbies.

Agreed. You could easily argue that in an agrarian society children are an economic benefit (because your wealth is based on working the land), whereas in an urban society having children is an economic burden.

But what I think is interesting about this story is the effects of a shrinking middle class on a society. Could this be a glimpse into what could happen in Western society if unemployment and the gap between rich and poor continues to grow?
