If I recall correctly, there was a noticeable difference in the HN front page on Christmas day. More unusual articles were upvoted than what usually gets posted. It could be due to the difference in visitors, but it might also be just that

While I agree with your reasoning, it's still best to make it easy for users to find what they need to locate. On your site, changing the login and forgot password links to white helps them stand out better against the background. Exam

This always seems to happen in situations like this. People jump to defend the actions of the company with statements like "It's their website, they can do what they want". Which is true, except nobody is arguing that fact.
