AFAIK it's also proportional to the number of rows with data in the indexed columns. Inserting a row with a NULL in the indexed column does not cause an update to the index (at least experimentally it doesn't seem to contribute to

I like this honesty and transparency, employers such as Microsoft encouraging it's employees to act in this way is a good thing. Shutting down discussion behind lawyers and bland public statements should be discouraged.

Worth bearing in mind that if you develop and ship software to third parties, you're going to want a lot of debug statements in the logs, so don't omit them completely!
