From my personal observation people with responsibiltes grieve at a later time and don't like most at the the of the incicent. It takes about 3 months to grieve some cases about a year later.

Remote work fights against ageism. That is one huge plus to me. I am in my 30's and worry about getting unemployed due to ageism. I am happy rote work is embraced.

Emacs pdf-tools mode is very much underrated. Checkout the list of org-roam ecosystem emacs packages. I don't know if Emacs supports excel or word.

Is Joelspolsky overrated ? There is no public code available to verify his competency like JohnCarmack. His writings are more about marketing and general technical knowledge. In my opinion he is overrated.

Buy a router that supports flashing openwrt. It is very transparent to debug and supports lots of features in addition to adblock, monitoring, etc at the router level.

There is another Emacs package "pdftools" which is very underrated. It's amazing package, and just like org-mode pdftools will also be useful for the next several decades

I like the old plugin model for its one click development cycle. The new plugin system forces to build the library which make the compile execute run cycle much longer

More importantly remote work tremendously helps overcome bias against age. Everything else trumps in comparison of not having a job due to age bias.
