A great book in the same vein is: Understanding UNIX/Linux-Programming by Bruce Molay.[0] It also delves into the basic tools and then writes them from scratch. I found it quite inspiring as to where to spend time while learning UNIX.

As a small business owner in Europe I have the same perspective. Maybe it's even just a gut feel of "if I pay money it's a more serious business relationship and I can depend on some rules", e.g. SLAs and data handling.
