Yup, I get 1-3ms to 1.1.1.1 and 18-20ms to Google from a semi-local fiber provider. Definitely blew my mind coming from the ~20ms DOCSIS adds.

TBF KaiOS had a measure of success but it is now on life support. The fact is Android could be scaled down way better than KaiOS could be scaled up. (and you could just wait for the perf/$ to continue to decrease).

only HDD drives I use are in a ZFS pool which has a very usable fragmentation value from zpool.

Thankfully it's not dissimilar to Synology internally: btrfs+mdadm on the smaller ones, ZFS on the big ones. Shouldn't be hard to migrate if it got discontinued.

SeaBIOS on a Coreboot laptop is pretty minimal. Paltry CPU speeds on anything that supports it nowadays, but fun for a beater system.
