Its possible some of it is true, I know well educated brahmin acquaintances who have outright said they are superior. I look like a brahmin person and they tend to let their guard down around me, But no one has ever asked me about my caste

In Canada there is significant overhead for a FTE, When I used to be a contractor for my own corp I realised how much overhead the company has on top of just salary, health insurance, CPP, EI etc.., Also as a contractor it was a win for me

Atleast these companies install the software on company laptops. I was asked to install a much more invasive software on my personal laptops (They wanted me as consultant) which took screenshots, logs keystrokes and pictures every 5 minutes

I live in Canada but I am sure the hiring situation is not that different in USA,we had a job posting for Software devs and QA for almost 7 months in my previous work place, at one point we even told a candidate what topics we want them to

Only problem you might have is you might have to start from the bottom of the ladder, Just because you have a Phd doesnt mean the companies will pay senior dev salary (that could depend on your employer and city you are in)
