Same here. Both copies I ordered were not working on arrival. I tried to switch the batteries but they were really stuck in there (can’t easily remove them without bending/breaking), eventually got them out and replaced them but one of

I agree, Mindstorms are really good. If they're not that used to programming yet they can start off using the graphical programming language (NXT-G). Then, when they're ready to really dig in, they can start using C.

I would recommend learning Objective-C. For your first app, you'll probably be doing a lot of Google and Stack-overflow searches and the vast majority of results and examples are in Objective-C. I would also recommend picking up one of
