At least hard drives still have decent seek times. Load time optimization for consoles with optical drives was another league: a single seek across the disk could lead to waiting a second longer on the loading screen.

Battery life depends a lot on which laptop you buy. With an old Elitebook Revolve with an Intel 5200U and a new Envy X360 with an AMD 4700U the battery life on Linux is about the same when compared to reviews on Windows. Especially the Envy

The large Toshiba drives they're using are enterprise drives. A couple of weeks ago these drives were among the cheapest (€/TB) drives to get here in the Netherlands, so I assume Backblaze just bought them because of their price.

Resilvering on ZFS in not linear, it is quite some random IO. A ST8000DM004 is capable of linear reads above 200MB/s, and a normal drive should be able to handle the same speeds with linear writes. I would not recommend those drives fo

You can get a Tyan Tomcat EX or one of the ASRock Rack AM4 boards that have an Aspeed AST2500 chip to provide remote management. However, it might be difficult (and expensive) to get 4 32GB UDIMMs to work properly.
