People have an OK grasp of formal logic, that is the formalism. It's learned at an early age, it's prerequisite for deductive (or inductive?) learning actually. Most might lack the cognitive ability to exercise those formalism in

That's probably why they have John Carmack on board. Half Life was a mod to his Quake 2. They had a friendly, cooperative relation so far, so I wouldn't worry.

Every other project comes up with its own wrapper for bit wise operations. Its not that big a piece of code to find and understand. Its a matter of taste. The first one is the canonical form (in C) and the only error source is the hex.
