It seems that many of the arguments against this system rely on believing governments (or similarly powerful groups) will strong-arm Apple and fabricate evidence. I fail to see how this system (which I'm not a big fan of, to be clear)

Yup. My personal machine is a base Late 2013 15” MacBook Pro (8GB RAM). Original battery, original storage, it saw very heavy usage up until a a couple of years ago. Still fast, decent battery.

I find it illuminating that this website tries to load at least 7 trackers, including from Facebook and Google, and that scrolling is broken when they are blocked. No current app store effectively blocks any of this, but I certainly imagine

This misses a pretty stellar entrant in the field, Atom + Hydrogen. Works nicely with multiple kernels (I use R and Python), allowing notebook-like functionality across multiple languages.
