In the UK, gas & electric is also privatised and in a poor state too :) Almost like private investment generates return for investors, not customers. Sometimes those align.

I’m in the UK and we recently got the Online Safety Act. We failed, this legislation is very popular with voters and not getting rolled back. Those that dislike it use a VPN and aren’t interested in fighting. I’d say most of the public here

The best carbon capture technology is to plant trees. As in, billions of trees per year, which is carbon negative only if the net number of trees is growing. Maybe even get creative on the biology side of things to make them easier to plant

Far easier to develop a culture of using something physical like yubikeys - over flimsy cardboard QR codes. The key metaphor makes a lot more sense that way, too.

I think a lot of these things are less important by the day though. Are VPNs or advanced security software even necessary if everything is in Notion/Google Docs and something like Codespaces is being used?

(Opinions are my own.) It used to be entirely custom, but is currently being re-based on VSCode. Overall very similar feel to Codespaces, just tailed for how Google works.

What's sorely needed is a way to stop the exfiltration of private data when it's not provided for a specific reason. I bet very few people who share their contacts with WhatsApp know they're getting uploaded to Facebook.
