It is true that there is a lot of fluff around the golden ratio, but it does have some cool properties in five-fold symmetry and the Fibonacci sequence, and as a result of the latter, in the spiral patterns of plants.

But can you really just use curve-fitting to extrapolate, without any theory of why the data should follow a curve? Would the data follow the same curve if you had 100 years of data? 200?
