Because of the productivity benefits of using public tools instead of internal ones. Devs are more familiar with them, more documentation and examples, morale benefit because skills are transferable to other jobs, etc.

It works fine. We have really good code search tools. The numbers include test code, utilities, two entire web browsers, UI frameworks, etc.

Apple uses grayscale font rendering too, not even pixel aligned. It looks nice because all of their devices are high DPI.

Font rendering was improved in the Anniversary update. It should use ClearType in most cases on landscape monitors with 100% DPI.

Spot on. In his ABC interview, he cited San Bernardino and 9/11 as reasons for this ban. The attackers in San Bernardino were a US citizen and Pakastani and the 9/11 attackers were from Saudi Arabia. Neither covered by this ban.
