Excellent point. But it would screw (even further) with their carrier relations. The carriers hate iMessage and push notifications as it is.

I hear what you're saying but in my family (Irish so sample size is huge) Dad, my father in-law, my kids (<5), two teenage nieces (admittedly the have access to a Mac, but its probably a 20% use case) are iPad only.

Outside Facebook, Pinterest is the only app the my wife, and most of her friends, use. It's not a tech early adopter story. And it has obvious monetization given the taste graph its curating, and affiliate opportunities.
