For a long time I used metapad as a notepad replacement https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metapad (I even renamed the exe to notepad). Very fast and minimal.

Haha that was the case at my uni too. I met my (ex) girlfriend on the unix system at uni through `talk` and `to` [1]. A lot of the CS students (me included) had .plans that we would update regularly as sort of proto-blogs. Definitely a lot

Same here! Very fond memories. I used Turbo Pascal 3.3 under CP/M on the Microbee but found it a bit hard and cumbersome to use. But when I discovered TP5 on MS-DOS I was blown away! This was coming from writing BASIC and batch files.
