From the article, she says they tried "1.0 / (1 << mj)", which turned out to be slower than the lookup table. May or may not be equivalent to java.lang.Math.scalb, I dunno.

I've found this tool to be super-helpful: https://github.com/dvorka/hstr It's like ctrl-r, but it shows you many candidates at once.

Would -XX:-UsePerfData also work? I noticed jankiness in my eclipse and adding that flag seemed to help.

I would guess that InnoDB is trying to preserve some behavior of MySQL where full table scans are expected to proceed by primary key order. The solution sounds fragile; I guess you can't query by extent?
