Good interview with McIlroy. Fix this: Goldstine, as in the citations, not Goldstein, as in the body text. Also, the text mentions CDC 1620. I don't think this existed. Either it was IBM 1620 or CDC something else. I'd be just

The ~ (tilde) escape character in UNIX cu (call UNIX) did the same thing in the 1970s, when the remote system was on the other side of a telephone modem or other serial port. I think it's safe to say that ssh is a descendant of cu. (

I think I remember (1980s/90s) if you were copying a file to/from a remote host (with ftp or something), you could improve the throughput speed by pinging the remote. Maybe ethernet, or maybe ppp/slip, I'm not sure.

Regarding resampling to 8kHz, traditional telephony resampled to 300 Hz to 3400 Hz. AM (medium wave) radio was up to about 5000 Hz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_frequency
