Thanks for your comments! I fully agree that the Python ecosystem is (overly) complex, and Conda is generally not necessary for Python tools. I made this library for a workflow management system, which can use any tool packaged with Conda,

Autotrace does have a tracing option "-centerline" which creates a single line on shape boudaries. I think it uses a fine thinning algorithm referenced in the scientific literature, but in the autotrace Todo list there is this ite
