They effectively do this all the time; by head-hunting individual and small groups of developers from smaller startups, especially ones where not everyone are A-players. It just is rarely reported on. Twitter and Square have been getting in

Number 1 reason: The standard library is tiny, so you need to pull in a lot of 3rd party modules (or write stuff yourself) for things that are just "batteries included" in Python or Ruby.

Actually, Best Buy potentially knows a whole lot more about you from one swipe of your driver's license. Your name, birthday, sex, height, weight, eye color, address; basically everything that's on the front of the license is also encoded

Nice enough idea; but having protobuf and boost as deps is just silly for a system utility.
