Surely FFMPEG being mostly LGPLv2 and some GPLv2 would have a bearing on the API reuse issue? Especially since they're open sourcing the code.

I agree, the author picked a really bad example(Office) to make his otherwise good point. Office certainly isn't a shitty product compared to its competition. You can use browser extensions like hckrnews or 'Hacker news enhancemen

I think it has to do with the trajectory. iPad = declining sales year over year Surface = increasing sales year over year The iPad was hyped to kill laptops/PCs and Surface's doom was also hyped, so the new data points are interes
