Short version: the Wired journalist doesn't really understand what they're talking about. I can't believe no-one has pointed this out yet. There is a Google Chrome Helper process for each tab you have open, for each extension

Pages does it too. Export a document in DOCX format and you get the same PNG file. Export a document in Word 97-2003 format and you get three of these PNG files! http://mcmillan.cx/blog/2014/05/31/bloated

Is there a chance that you have more than one instance of Java installed? I've seen this on a few machines. An up to date copy of Java in "c:\Program Files" and an outdated version still sitting in "c:\Windows". Try

Just tried this myself with a couple of 8.5MB MP3 files. One appeared on the second machine in about a minute, the other in about a minute 30. Not sure why this is taking upwards of 12 minutes for the OP.
