What you just described is basically why the patent system sucks - if your idea is so obvious that other people will think of it, it's not worthy of one. Your motive for getting the patent is to block other people from doing something obvio

Make sure you're using an application-specific password for any application that doesn't support two factor authentication - eg, Mail.app on Lion. Thats what they're for.
