1. I most definitely agree and was the approach I took to my professor when I met with him, but he needs a solid idea to start with to make sure that we don't do five half-assed things throughout the semester and end up with nothing to show

I love hackathons. With more content this could be something that I would use. As far as feedback. Geolocating on the homepage for hackathons near the user would be an instant way to demonstrate the usefulness. Just a thought.
