It's not a myth, as far as I can tell. Note I didn't say they invented the term (though, granted, I inadvertently did imply it I suppose). In any case it likely helped popularize it.

Elastic tabspots everywhere would be ideal. But in the real world I think 'tabs to indent, spaces to align' is the superior way, as every dumb text editor will support it.
