One thing I'd also recommend for speeding up django is swapping in djinja. Straight drop in replacement for almost the entire template engine, but much faster.

Which is just further proof that this is in no way ready for any mainstream use. If your (usually not technical) users have to go through two different menus just show your fancy icons you're doing it wrong.
