This is actually state law in CA. People reported Sony to California's Attorney General, who basically said they weren't going to do anything about it. Unfortunately the law is only as useful as its enforcement.

I did this at my university, where printing is not supported on Linux. Thanks to Fable, I can now print from my linux laptop and don't pay their ridiculous per-page fee
