Have you tried disabling the apps instead of uninstalling them? I've had good luck with this on stock roms when you can't uninstall the carrier's apps. Settings » Apps » All » Application Name » Disable Technically the app is

I notice that they're using a 500GB 5400RPM boot drive. Is there a need for that large of a boot drive? I would have expected that an SSD boot drive would be preferable.

This is unlikely considering you only have access to the external power supply. As Dave notes there is a filtering stage on the PCB to help isolate the chip.
