That's an interesting point (re: doing something specific) which applies not just to college students. The truth is once you have clarity and vision, what ever it is you are doing seems like poor usage of your time. Having said, it's not

Has anyone one found a solution for older Macs not running on Intel? I've been successfully with a firewire external HD but not a USB key. (The machine could still be useful with a USB.)

Definitely agree with you. I would add that choice is quite often made by the technology leadership which of course is a corollary to the technology choices already made. One last point, I will make is that cost factors in at some point. T
