I'm not much of an x86 person but on other architectures you can raise software interrupts/exceptions. Does x86 not have this or did those facilities not cover enough use cases?

I may try this out. I pulled https://github.com/lawrie/fpga_pio , synthed the uart rx with vivado, and it was 1.4k luts, 322 FF. It seems within range of a starting point. I'm sure others have thought the same thin
