Did they do this to "protect" people, or for more control? Almost any ban can be said to be done to protect people. Cant have them reading some books for their own good!

Anything "big" causes me to pause and count the concerns. The bigger any entity is the more damage they can cause. I tend to support "small" things as best I can.

I would say much of the negativity is because certain very large institutions have a huge incentive to not want bitcoin to "succeed" and would paint it in a negative light any way they could.

Some of these exchanges have come a long way and the volatility makes it great to trade cryptos. I still view it as the wild west, so scammers everywhere, but where there is chaos there is profit!
