The comment implies that this is somehow hardcoded just for Google sites, which is not true. Autoplay is allowed for sites with a high enough media engagement index. You can check chrome://media-engagement.

Indeed. The Gmail app itself has been able to act as an IMAP client before, but (as it's purely client side) this mode doesn't offer all Gmail features and is quite battery and bandwidth intensive as IMAP wasn't really design

I think you've misread that. They don't use the layer 2 of EWZ, but they do use the fibers (layer 1).

You only get redirected to this page when you have no previous cookies, in which case you're likely either a new user (that should see a beautiful landing page) or using incognito or cleared your cookies. There's unfortunately not

No, what it means is that 3rd party clients can still interoperate with Hangouts. What does not work is XMPP the way app engine uses it.

I think what he means here is that all the code that is abstracted into functions etc. is "unrolled" (at some sensible level) into one main function so you can see the complete flow of the program without searching around.

This has been unlaunched because there were too many reports of people who were confused by it. E.g. when you copy a link out of the mail, or when you're a compulsive text markers like I am. It can still be enabled as a lab though.

This was more of an oversight of some other changes than a conscious decision. It's definitely a known issue though.
