At least in Poland even during vacation they are required to be at school for administrative reasons. Doing nothing, but still forced to be there.

For you it was common thing, at mine classes best we did was adding numbers in assembly. Don't assume everyone had the same uni experience.

That feels like USA thing. In Europe it's way lower in average, in Poland average programmist will earn 6-7k per month - around 1.700 USD Heard similarly about pay in Germany - being a programmist doesn't pay you well

In Poland it was a very common thing in high school for us to skip school and study for high school exam on our own, as that was more effective usage of time we felt.
