I think the use of Lua language doesn't prevent Wikipedia to provide these features in future. They are more resolving server performance issues. The client processing is not to be affected.

I think it's difficult that the current state of things fall into stagnation. Firefox, for instance, still supports Gecko, which is open source too.

My bank uses a security module written in Java. I had to switch from Google Chrome to Firefox because Java 7 for Mac doesn't have a compatible version for Chrome. Mysteries from Oracle.

Changed so much that version 7 does not support 32-bit applications anymore. I was impressed, for real.
