To me it's a bit like maintenance: You only notice it's there when it doesn't work. Like someone else said, we have no idea how much crap they actually catch, maybe the boston incidence is just one instance out of many others

I can tell you the sound is NOT purely psychological. I used to around 1-2km away from one. When the wind came from "the right" direction, it sounded like a thunderstorm. I can't even imagine what it is like living even closer to one.
