I don't think this is crazy at all. We use something similar as this internally as well, which we custom built to our needs. Instead of Serf we use Zookeeper/etcd though.

Wow, this is sad. Hope we can get more info on what was going on. Besides Bugtraq what mailing lists security wise do you follow? EDIT: Or what other general means by Twitter, Websites, Databases, Blogs etc. do you recommend?

Yeah, totally agree on that. We noticed this as well when approaching it naively via simple clustering then going through different color spaces and methods until finally getting some decent results.
