IF you treat an employee with respect and take him seriously and explain why you are doing Y instead of X, that employee will tell you again when he has other ideas. You can have as close a relationship with an employee as you do with a f

Hey there- That's what happens when you have creative collaboration with someone. Every employee you hire should be sharp enough to be able to do so, and the good ones will be bringing ideas to you unbiden. If you've got a co-founder, gr

Hmm... I don't know what was angry about what I posted. I just saw another "how to get a founder" thread followed close on the heels of a post on another site from someone lamenting that they couldn't find a co-founder. Sure, it has suck

The plane analogy doesn't work because dual engine planes are more reliable than single engine planes... unlike founding teams, engine can't decide that they want to go in different directions and engines are not insecure, ego driven, or pr

LOL, I love guys like Joel Spolsky-- self anointed gurus handing out really terribly advice to uncritical lemmings.... this reduces competition in the marketplace for those of us who think (and have experience.) Joel is like one of those i

Really, its backwards. Speed to market is a factor of team size-- the more engineers you hire the slower you are to get to market. So, VC funding slows down the rate of feature development. A small tightly focused and really motivated tea

If a term sheet isn't horrible, then the lawyer you're using is the one the VC firm hooked you up with! Sounds like you believe you need to spend it all before you make anything.. I think you've got it backwards. If someone wants to charge

Unless your product requires you to build a factory (and even if you're in the manufacturing business its highly unlikely that you can't profitably outsource even manufacturing) -- then you absolutely shouldn't take VC funding. YC, Angel,

Sigh. Confusing correlation with causation is exactly the kind of foolish error that I'm talking about. I think its a very childish response to accuce me of being angry or jealous because I have a different opinion, tht is strongly held.

I think you gave what should be the correct answer, but unfortunately, I think in practical terms, it is not the current answer for this community.

Put another way- what this forum should be is a place where news is discussed and people provide encouragement and help to other founders. People here should be judged on how they help others, and the reasons they give for their advice. W

Best solution for this would be for you to start being neutral and less mercurial in your treatment of people on the forum. As for me, since you think I'm a troll, you should delete my account. I'll move along... its no fun when for every

And right now the winds are not favorable for these startups, but because the winds were in that direction 10 years ago, everyone's convinced that's the only direction the winds blow. Look at the vitreol I've gotten for pointing out that

That was a completely calm response. PG is engaging in exactly the behaviour he was accusing me of. I don't see how "namecalling" is keeping a high signal to noise ratio.

That's cult-of-personality thinking. It invovles the fallacious argument "appeal to authority". If I told you I was Tony Robbins and I was a multi-millionaire., would that sway you? I doubt it because, despite being someone who has been

My analogy does work, but I wasn't talking aobut YC, I was talking about VC. I wasn't saying the YC model was broken, I was saying the VC model is broken. This is not an "emotionally charged" analogy, it is exatly correct. This is pro

No, you're missing the point. I wasn't arguing against YC, but against VC money. YC doesn't have liquidation preferences, and if it did, the multiple of $20k would be so small its not really relevant in this discussion.
