Can you elaborate on being unprepared? Do they struggle with algorithms and data structures? Do they not grasp the computer at a lower level? I fully agree with the mediocrity part though.

Spiky cells breakup the larger cells. I guess similar to the government breaking up monopolies. A bit of a stretch though.
