Agreed. I think lag / ping is just as important as throughput in determining subjective snappiness of a connection (unless you're doing large up/downloads.

It seems to vary with the originating site. Most of my experiences have matched yours, but a couple of sites let me in after one screen with no additional screens or even replacement photos - and that was using same browser and same IP.
