And the only part that an average user can hope to replace. I tried to replace a cracked sceen once, and ruined the phone. And I consider myself pretty handy, I do all my own car repairs, household plumbing, etc.

  Nope, shiftphone's display can be replaced in a minute, without any tools. And it's as waterproof as the iPhone or similar device.

It also seems reasonable that something you're going to be realistically doing once per 3-4 years would require 1 or 2 hours. Moreover, the regulation doesn't affect this process, apart from "no proprietary tools". > That’s the only part that will wear out within a reasonable lifecycle. Millions of broken screens and back glass/plastic panels beg to differ.

    Screens generally break because you dropped the phone and you can take out have the components that way. But no matter what your battery is at 80 or 70 percent in 2 years. Power connectors are much harder to engineer to be replaced. Something has to connect at some point

      Delete unused apps and set your phone to flight mode when not using it. This does wonders to your battery life. A 5 year old phone can last a week. Of course this doesn't work if you're expecting to receive calls or notifications.

        What’s the point of having a phone then ? I personally buy mid range phones for around 400$ and then buy new after 2 years. Better than buying a 1200$ phone and expecting it to last 5 years

In Germany both Shift and Gigaset have had user replaceable batteries for over a decade. The rebrands like Volla and rePhone, obviously. The Finish Jolla has a new phone with battery, camera lenses, etc. Typing on a GS5 with Sailfish. Repair of display was easy to perform.
