A better question would be: why do we have a society where the elderly have to work to survive and get their basic needs met?

  That’s also a good question, but ultimately a separate one. My point is that replacing people with robots before answering your question is irresponsible.

Option c: grind him up and mix him in with hamburger. Society saves money on his pension/housing/etc and consumers save a bit on their grocery bill. Didn't Paul Wolfowitz say something about how there will be no more poverty once we eat all the poor?

  This idea has been proposed as far back as 1729 by Jonathan Swift but it hasn't seem to caught on at all in the intervening years.

    Sounds like there's a market for ground vegan meat. Obviously it'd have to be very expensive and exclusive. AI powered robots can replace the poors that are too zombified to do their jobs. Think of the pharmaceutical possibilities from the outbreaks. Stocks are going to soar!

If someone spends a trillion building out AI while saying the quiet part out loud, "stop hiring humans", then maybe they should be paying half of that towards a Ubi fund for everyone they're displacing.
