- chii 19d agocompletely expected, but still quite sad. But like hydra, cut off one head, and two shall spawn. It should never be illegal to proxy another site, if the information content from that site was originally user generated. Using copyright as a shield is just a legal mechanism, and i don't believe it is just. Therefore, it is civic duty for all to commit civil disobedience on this.

- nielsbot 18d agoI do find it disconcerting for a private company to have so much control over what is not essentially a public resource. There should be a government provided alternative.

I suspect this may be an unpopular take, but this late in the game I simply think less of people who continue to use twitter while complaining about how bad it has gotten. Of course it got bad. And it is continually going to get worse. It is never again going to be that place that only lives on in people's rose-colored nostalgia. But... they can leave it. The world will keep turning, and in fact will improve.

- beej71 19d agoAll those groups that use Twitter for announcements need to consider the negative connotations of being seen there, IMHO.
- ButlerianJihad 19d agoHonestly, I must personally consider the negative connotations and fundamental sanity of those who refuse to call the X service by a name it’s had for several years. To introduce even more confusion since the actual trademark holders are re-establishing it anew this year.

- georgemcbay 19d agoMy point is that people can choose not to use twitter despite the network effects. I don't not use twitter because I think it hurts twitter. I don't use twitter because I know using it will hurt me. Any politician/business/service/whatever that only makes announcements exclusively on twitter simply won't reach me, and I'm fine with that. I can't think of a single instance where missing such an announcement directly on the twitter timeline would have changed my life in a significant way.

- techteach00 19d agoit's funny. Twitter lost so much of it's power and reach when it went behind a login type paywall. if people can't see what's posted, why post it lol? The super majority of people see tweets logged out. Dead platform.
- rf15 19d agoWon't this lead to even less people looking at the platform? Are they trying to cut off the cultists inside from any outside observability? Doesn't that directly result in less power/influence for Musk?
- conartist6 19d agoYes. Since they've made clear that I'm unwelcome, I'll also simply skip over reading their content wherever it is embedded on the internet now.
- cyberge99 19d agoPride always comes before the fall. Some think Musk bought Twitter/X because of the bots, not in spite of them. Given recent events and social media manipulation that occurred right before the last US election and the character that has since been revealed, it doesn’t surprise me.
- Markoff 19d agowell, since Nitter stopped working I've stopped reading Twitter posts, it doesn't seem like much information value for me was lost, though especially now during Nepal floods it would be probably good source of videos, more difficult to skim through them on Reddit/4chan, if one is interested in videos of disasters
- Leonard_of_Q 19d agoSelf-hosted Nitter still works for now, it is what I use to read X posts. You do need an (or, better still, some) account(s) but those are easy to create for now. The account(s) don't need any history, freshly-minted free accounts do just fine.
- swed420 19d agoHow is using self-hosted Nitter as a 1:1 proxy meaningfully different from just logging in to your account?
- cyberge99 19d agoIt denies X/Twitter tracking metadata and metrics.
- swed420 18d agoBut you're still making specific requests with it from your IP, which will filter into metadata and metrics. It seems like Nitter loses its original value proposition once it's no longer a one-to-many proxy.
- Leonard_of_Q 16d agoYou can have it use more than one account and more than one user can use the instance. Also, I do not use it to hide my occasional peek at an X thread linked to from some article from the X-man, I use it because it is at least 10 times faster than the lethargic drugged ground sloth that is the X site. I do not 'use' X (not Twitter before that) since I never considered the character-limited shout-your-blurb style it promotes to be fitting to what I want to say and how I want to say it. Nitter enables me to see what is said, quickly. I don't need more than that.
