The surveillance factor of LinkedIn is exactly what keeps me entirely off of it... I don't think I've ever gotten a job by using it, it's more like a spare online copy of my resume more than anything else... It also keeps trying to create a new account automatically off of my gmail account that I can't close... Pretty much a waste of productivity for me to try to use it.

It is advertised as a necessary evil; "everyone needs one for employment" I recently deleted my LinkedIn. It is just used to data mine information from you. I think the site is generally pretty useless, even without all the privacy concerns.

  99.9% of the time, it is just complete spam and a gross feeling data-mine. Twice it has gotten me job offers that have added a significant amount to my net worth. So my feelings are pretty mixed. I wouldn't blame anybody for disposing of it though.

  I deleted my LinkedIn account over a decade ago because I couldn't tolerate the spam. Doing that had zero effect on my career or ability to find good jobs.

    Same here - I was using one mail address only for linkedin, which wasn't listed on the page. One day I started receiving 3rd party spam on that address - which means linkedin sold the address, despite them claiming not to do that, or they had a data leak, which they also claimed they didn't have.

You dont get jobs on there because unless you have a “god tier” resume and application filled out, HR has to pay to unlock your name from your application, so nobody is going to do that if you arent the #1 candidate in all of LinkedIn that applied. LinkedIn is its own worst enemy.

  I'm using LinkedIn ATM (searching for a new job) and all the jobs I've applied for have gone off site to the company's own applicant submit site. So I don't get what LinkedIn is actually locking up?

    Yeah at least all the big companies in my town seem to use LinkedIn as a place to get views for job postings, and then they funnel them to their internal system.

    Nothing, that take is just salty. You can easily get jobs on LinkedIn. I've employed most of the people in my teams via LinkedIn over the years.

      It seems very spotty to me. I have no doubt it would be a good in some geos or if you can be roughly the cheapest of acceptable GEOS for a remote job, etc, while in other areas I don't think anyone is that serious about follow through on LinkedIn.

  Counterpoint: I basically get all of my jobs on there. Switching on the available for work sign is more effective than the bat signal. I work in a relatively niche and extremely demanding industry, which may contribute.
