Ask HN: Will Anthropic or OpenAI start offering Chinese open source models?
Do you think there could exist a situation in the market where either Anthropic or OpenAI will offer chinese models for their clients?
- Gecko4072 2mo agoI think they have a compute shortage and this wouldn’t look very good to investors.
- jqpabc123 2mo agoI think they have a moat shortage and this shouldn't look very good to investors.
- petesergeant 2mo agoCan you explain why you think they would?
- jqpabc123 2mo agoI think a more likely scenario is Anthropic and OpenAI clients start using Chinese open source models directly. Why pay more for a middleman if you can go directly to the source? The problem for Anthropic and OpenAI is to devise some political scheme to stop them.
- blitzar 2mo agoWill Ford or Tesla start offering German cars? Do you think there could exist a situation in the market where either Ford or Tesla will offer BMWs or Mercedes to their clients?
- jnaina 2mo agosure, upon the successful launch of porcine aviation
- eth0up 2mo agoI assure you, I can throw an Oscar Meyer just as far as a Hebrew National. And let's remember, China conquered the US pork market many years ago ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithfield_Foods https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smithfield_Foods ) Porcine aviation may be closer than we think. We would be wise to not misunderestimate the Chinese.
- jnaina 2mo agonope, never gonna happen. DC treats American AI supremacy as national security, IPO fortunes depend on the "America leads" story and the trump sycophants/toadies/roadies stand to gain millions from the IPO, and everyone thinks Chinese open weights are dumping meant to kill US labs, so Ant and OI will not want to wade into that.
- paulcole 2mo agoSo Anthropic makes a new model, Qwen or whoever learns how it works and makes their model nearly (but not quite) as good and then sells it back to Anthropic? Like the soap-making scene in Fight Club.
