  It’s very close to c though, close enough that it beats sending a signal around the Earth. The drawback is the impractical size and cost of a receiver.

      HFT peeps are Comfortable spending millions on custom high speed undersea cables to save few ms o'er request. How about saving few hundred ms across the earth?
