Show HN: I'm building a Product Hunt alternative, it's 4 days old
- dubesar55 2y agoWhy is it required and how is it different
- mrsegev 2y agoFor starters, it has a single list and not a "featured" list and "the list no one looks at". Also, poroduct orders are randomized to ensure fairness and eliminate popularity contests. And finally, no VC money that influences what visitors get to see on the home page. Simply cool products.
- klntsky 2y agoGood ideas. Reduces biases as well. However, are you sure real product hunters want exactly that?
- vidyesh 2y agoI know what you mean by popularity contests. Launching on PH has become just a game of whom you know to get the first big push. But do you really think randomization is good thing? There is value in curation, upvotes have values, we upvote as a sign of approval, ranking based on upvotes has the benefit of visitor engagement which is not only good for your site but also the products that are highly voted! People have very little time to engage with websites they visit daily, upvotes need to have more value than just being displayed. Low upvotes doesn't always have to mean they are not "launched" successfully but most times those low upvotes also mean the product is bad or as you might say its not a cool product.
- threeseed 2y ago> whom you know Or who you are willing to pay. I know of a few people who earn most of their income from getting their network to launch and promote products on PH.
- Etheryte 2y agoThere is value in curation though, no? I don't know if you've ever checked out the newest submissions list on HN [0], but a lot of it is either self-promotion, common reposts, or just clickbait. The front page meanwhile is usually pretty engaging and has a lot of good content. This is the result of people voting, flagging, etc and that curation and moderation is what makes the HN front page good. Simply listing everything that has been submitted is a race to the bottom. - mrsegev 2y agoAbsolutley. The problem is that a lot of hard working builders products never get to see the day of light.
- semanser 2y agoI had a similar idea for a while. Happy to see someone is actually doing it. One of the main problems of PH is the amount of bots and fake accounts. Any plans of fighting that? PH is still a great platform for visibility since it gets tons of traffic.
- mritchie712 2y ago> I had a similar idea for a while. Happy to see someone is actually doing it. what's the idea? looks like a less polished PH.
- Nickydigit 2y agoNeat ! A quick suggestion : maybe make products items in the list a link instead of a div with JS onClick event (or adapt the event), so that we can open them up in a new tab instead of having to click, view, and then go back to the main list ? I'm used to opening all the stuff that interest me in a new tab and continue scrolling, then look into them once I've finished the list. Maybe other people do it too :)
- log_e 2y ago[flagged]
- mrsegev 2y agooh that's a great idea! Thank you!

- LaundroMat 2y agoThis is by the way a pet peeve of mine. I see this all the time, and can't understand why people won't keep the default functionality of a simple link. (No offense meant to the creator of the website we're discussing. It's the general trend of replacing fault tolerant browser defaults with JS that can break or removes standard functionality that bothers me).
- Brajeshwar 2y ago(Neither against the makers of this website.) But many a front-end devs these days seem to have skipped basic HTML altogether! Recently, there was https://htmlforpeople.com https://htmlforpeople.com Start with the default HTML, and then add the ornaments on top.
- walugiaer 2y agoMissed a trick: "Show HN: I'm building a Product Hunt alternative: it's launching today"
- digitcatphd 2y agoNice. I feel like PH has gotten overly commercialized.
- MavisBacon 2y agoI used to love it so much but I stopped when the feed became more algorithm based (looks like they reversed much of that though). There's just a whole lot of noise to sift through now regardless. 80% of products seem end their description with "with AI". I just think the maker spirit that was previously present is hard to find now.
- mrsegev 2y agoSame here buddy
- maeil 2y agoOne of the biggest issues with Product Hunt is that more than 60% of its users are bots [1]. Any plans for keeping your alternative from ending up in the same state? [1] https://wakatime.com/blog/67-bots-so-many-bots https://wakatime.com/blog/67-bots-so-many-bots
- mrsegev 2y agoI feel like this is a problem for later as my traffic is no where near PH. But social verification can be a good start
- notachatbot123 2y agoThat comparison of box plots is so stupid it made me close the tab. The "bot"'s comment activity has three peaks: Morning, lunch and quitting time. Congratulations, you "detected" a human pattern.
- potamic 2y agoHow are you thinking about monetizing and funding this in the long term?
- mrsegev 2y agoYes, eventually I'll need to sell few sponsorship slots to keep the lights on
- bevan 2y agoCongrats on the launch! Are you addressing any specific issues with product hunt? Would be nice to see those on the homepage, as it’s not clear from the website copy what the advantage is.
- Brajeshwar 2y agoYour connection to Supabase is dropping and seems to be down for your website.
- andrewstuart 2y agoThere should be a site for launching product hunt alternative sites.
- mrsegev 2y agobrb. building :O
- MavisBacon 2y agoyou gave me a good chuckle!
- cristyansv 2y agoIt would be interesting to have a "No AI" section since Product Hunt is currently flooded with AI-only products.
- sanp 2y agoIs it on Product Hunt?
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- synotna 2y agoCongrats on the launch Please consider fixing that middle click opens in a new tab
- ColinPeng 2y agoIt’s not a good product itself, with too many obvious bugs. The first issue was that I couldn’t log in with my Google account, and it redirected to an invalid page. After waiting for two days, it finally worked. Later, the scheduled product kept showing as pending, even though the set time had long passed.
