  Man I hate their licensing system. Now I have to buy an updated license so my fallback version will be at least this new version. So I have to pay for another license to get this fix.

    You have a choice between software frozen in time (perpetual fallback license) or continually updated (subscription plan)

    That's exactly how the licensing works. You get a perpetual license for the version you bought at that point in time as a fall back if you don't renew a subscription which frankly is much more than most offer. If you're wanting a perpetual license that includes all future updates across all versions then I am afraid that doesn't exist pretty much anywhere. Fruity Loops is the only software I know that is still developed heavily and gets updates in this way.

      Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve Studio, but, unlike JetBrains, neither Apple nor Blackmagic rely on software sales for most of their revenue. Also, I can think of a few utility programs like Alfred[1] and BetterTouchTool[2] that offer lifetime upgrades at additional cost. Finally, consumer Windows appears to have more or less adopted this model, subsidized by a steady stream of volume and OEM license sales.       To be honest it does feel weird that the subscription allows you to upgrade to latest yet not use it after it ends. I personally would think that something like "You purchase a year of versions, so final one you would be able to upgrade to - would be your perpetual subscription"

lets assume that Ubuntu Linux from Canonical is a solid platform. However, snapd is intrusive and still not stable IMO. The implementation of libc as a snap component, and the Firefox Browser as a snap component, are notably onerous. Some linux downstream from Ubuntu remove snapd completely. JetBrains -- please support installation on Ubuntu minus the snapd system. thanks in advance

  I run kubuntu on my home computer with snapd removed and have 0 issues running JetBrain products. What issue are you having ? I've installed IntelliJ via Toolbox. Prior to that I did install it using the archive they provide.

    Same here. I've got Jetbrain's Toolbox on a Debian system, no snapd, no problems.

  I've not used Toolbox that other commenters are mentioning, but there is an unofficial ppa. https://github.com/JonasGroeger/jetbrains-ppa https://github.com/JonasGroeger/jetbrains-ppa. I used to do basically the same thing, build our own deb packages for use in our org, and the PPA works perfectly.

  You can just download the software from their site as an archive with pre-built executables in it and it works just fine on Ubuntu.

  Just download it directly from Jetbrains then, this isn't an issue. Pycharm's archive for instance can be found here https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/other.html https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/other.html

        According to JetBrains > Neither we nor our service providers use your data or code for training any generative models. This is some very weasel-wording stuff written by a lawyer. It probably means their parent company can use the code for training, they just can't do it directly.

        How else would they be able to provide the service? They aren’t doing the compute on my laptop, otherwise I’d have to download model files, etc.

I read the ToS when this issue surfaced last month. I think JetBrains tried to do a reasonable job of restricting the use of code by the AI companies. I think the thing they missed is that many of us don’t trust those companies and don’t think AI is going to bring the gains being promised. I personally think we’ll see larger volumes of mediocre junk and fewer amazing, innovative things built by extremely talented experts. I don’t want to contribute anything to AI.

  I am not against AI, per se, but I am against giving unfettered access to my data implicitly for who knows the purpose. In many cases it isn't even my data to grant access to.

There should be a customer veto gremium in any company, with customer representives who can veto the latest hyped up bs before it gets forcefed into something vital and does real harm to the core product.

I tried AI Assistant and it's profoundly bad. The free trial didn't work (server error), so I put in my credit card and paid the extra cost. Same server error. Asked in the Discord and they said it was a known error that you could buy the product and it wouldn't be available 'for a while'??? Come back tomorrow, it works, but barely. It's slow, inserts code in random places that makes no sense, can't answer basic questions about basic functions. It's useless. There's MVP tier and then there's not even testing whether you can purchase the product.

I am not against AI, per se, but I am against giving unfettered access to my data implicitly for who knows the purpose. In many cases it isn't even my data to grant access to.
