Calling Walmart a "grocery store chain" is like saying GE is a "light bulb company".

- maximus-decimus 3y agoI don't get your point. Are you saying Walmart shouldn't sell food? Shouldn't be able to sell diverse things? Shouldn't be able to make money by selling things?

There's a point to be made that vertical integration is bad for the system as a whole... and there is historic examples where such schemes got broken up, e.g. by the Paramount case [1]. That's some bad faith nonsense. Superstores are bad. They hurt small businesses and provide awful service and an awful shopping environment. The prices aren't even low, they just made the quality of the goods fit the price. If Walmart wants to be a grocer, let them focus on that so that a better store for electronics, furniture, firearms (etc.) can take their place.
- NegativeLatency 3y agoStores like Walmart also commonly build outside of town relying on unsustainable highway development practices for customers to travel there. (Compared to your old school neighborhood or corner grocery store)
- NegativeLatency 3y agoThey're consistently one of the largest grocery sellers in the US, so I think it's fair.
