Ask HN: What is your new year's resolution for 2024?
More vices? Less vices?
Start something? End something?
Looking forward to hearing what the HN community is resolved to do in 2024 :)
- kakaz 3y agoPay less attention to cranks like ecologists, extremists, cultists etc
- iamflimflam1 3y agoWhy ecologists? Ecologists study the relationship between plants, animals and the environment.
- ricberw 3y agoI feel like I need to go back to the basics: build great things.
- linsomniac 3y agoI want to get back on focusing on physical fitness. I did a big push a couple years ago but have been sliding over the last year, and especially over the holidays, partially because of some additional stress of a family medical situation. Not really a resolution, but something I plan to focus on after the holidays.
- hortonew 3y agoI'd like to be more deliberate in what I choose to do. Part of this goes with the old saying of "eat the frog first". I want to stop doing the quick and easy thing and do the thing that i'm constantly thinking about. Usually I think: if I just knock out these quick things, I'll have more space to think through the hard problem. But the quick and easy things don't stop coming.
- cwdegidio 3y agoGetting away from time wasting things like mindlessly scrolling Reddit. I realized about a month ago it has slowly grown into an addiction... nothing to do? Pull out the phone and scroll. Now I'm limiting myself to consuming content differently. Checking HN once or twice a day. Using RSS to subscribe to blogs I find interesting instead of having my content fed to me. With the time I'm getting back, I'm putting a lot more energy back into personal learning and finishing my MSCS. Also fell of the "staying fit" wagon near the end of the year so I plan on getting back to the gym and getting outside more.
- gwill 3y agoif you happen to use NextDNS or an equivalent, i added reddit to my list of blocked domains so if there is something i want to read on there it has to be worth disabling my ad block temporarily.
- cwdegidio 3y agoNot a bad idea! I'll look into it :). The temptation is real all the time.
- meridion 3y agoI recommend using Feedly to organize and browse your RSS feeds. I've been using it for over a decade now!
- cwdegidio 3y agoI used to use NetNewsWire, so I redownloaded it. I'll check out Feedly... never afraid to evaluate new tools.
- billconan 3y agoI want to publish some papers. I want to have side-incomes.
- oaw-bct-ar-bamf 3y agoSolve a leetcode easy and leetcode medium problem in the morning before starting my dayjob. I wanted to prepare for the next interviews sometime mid last year but lost the motivation. It is very easy to skip the interview-prep after a full working day. Best to do a short programming riddle after waking up when the mind is still fresh.
- lmedinas 3y agoI finally want to get more physical activity and find time for me.
- Quinzel 3y agoI have a few goals that I’m already working on, because I believe you can resolve to improve yourself at any time and you don’t have to wait for the start of a new year… but my goals that I’d like to achieve in 2024 is to run a couple of half marathons. Ideally one will be in another country. I also want to work on my strength training because I generally hate it and need to change my attitude towards it as I feel like as I get older it’s more important to make sure my body works how it’s supposed to. I’m also going to do physio to hopefully help reduce pain in my archilles tendons. I’d like to negotiate a substantial pay rise at work, and I’m also going to get them to pay for one of my Masters degree’s, which will help for my skills to be more internationally recognised within the medical field so I can travel and work in more places. I am also planning to graduate in June, and am starting an additional Masters in July, so hoping to do well in that too. I’d also like to buy a house, but that’s tricky, if that doesn’t work out, then I’m going to do a trip to Japan with some of the money I earned by doing extra contract work over and above my usual job during the holiday season.
- nojvek 3y agoGet deeper into fundamentals of ML. Train my own models. Get deeper into electronics, learn how to design PCB boards and build little AI toys.
- prashantsengar 3y agoSell my current side-project. I started working on it as a student to learn how to build for people, some selling skills, and earn a little money if possible. Now that I don't have to spend much time on it every month, I intend to finish a few more things over weekends and sell it so that I can start working on something fresh. I just haven't learnt how to hire and get people to work - let's see if I can try that too while I try selling :)
- hammyhavoc 3y ago1440p. But seriously, to continue to support free libre open-source software and hardware in whatever way I can, even if the alternatives aren't quite there yet for some things. Plasma Mobile is shaping up to be very interesting indeed.
- grepexdev 3y agoWhat are some libre projects that you are most passionate about? I'm looking for some to dive into.
- v_hacker 3y agoStart writing, get my name out there, talk openly about my business ideas. Have fun talking to like-minded ppl. Stop bothering so much about my well paid engineering job, pays the bills, nothing fancy to make a big deal out of!
